The National Medical Commission (NMC) has officially released the MBBS seat matrix for the 2026-27 academic year, bringing significant relief to lakhs of medical aspirants across India. The total number of undergraduate medical seats in the country (excluding Institutes of National Importance like AIIMS and JIPMER) has now reached 1,36,939 across 823 medical colleges.
Key Statistics of the 2026-27 Seat Matrix
This year’s expansion includes 9,911 newly approved seats, added to the 1,27,028 existing seats that were renewed. The growth is distributed across both public and private sectors:
- Total Seats: 1,36,939
- Government Colleges: 441 institutions offering 63,296 seats
- Private Colleges: 382 institutions offering 73,643 seats
- New Colleges: 25 newly established medical colleges have contributed 2,400 of the new seats
Leading States in Seat Capacity
Several states have seen a substantial increase in their medical education capacity. Karnataka continues to lead the nation in total seat count, followed closely by Uttar Pradesh and Tamil Nadu:
- Karnataka: 15,395 total seats
- Uttar Pradesh: 14,000 total seats
- Tamil Nadu: 13,999 total seats
- Maharashtra: 13,099 total seats
Impact on NEET Aspirants
The addition of nearly 10,000 seats is expected to provide more opportunities for students to secure medical seats within India, potentially moderating the competitive cut-off ranks for the upcoming counselling process. The NMC has strictly directed counselling authorities to adhere to this approved seat matrix and has warned that any admissions beyond the sanctioned strength will invite regulatory action.
